Examination

Introduction of Credit Grading & Semester System by University of Mumbai From The academic year 2011-12
  • The semester, Credit and Grading System has been implemented for all the under Graduate (UG) programs under the faculty of Art’s Commerce and Science from the academic year 2011-12
  • The system has been implemented for semester-I for the newly admitted learners (Students) And it will be subsequently implemented.
     
Concepts of Credit System
  • Involves braking done the curriculum into measure units that can be combined to get a degree /diploma.
  • A ‘credit’ is generally a ‘value’ used to measure a students work load in terms of learning time required to complete course units, resulting in learning outcomes.
  • It is a way of expressing the ‘learner’s workload’(Students)
  • One (01) Credit is thirty (30) learning hours.
 
TERMINOLOGY USED IN CREDIT SYSTEM
  • Credit Points  This has reference to the ‘workload’ of learner and is an index of the number of learning hours deemed for a certain segment of learning .The Course may be assigned any
  • Where between 4 to 8 credit points where in 1 credit is equal to 30 learning hours.
  • Credit Completion or Credit acquisition It may be considers to make place after the learner has successfully cleared all the evaluation criteria with respect to single course.
 
PHILOSOPHY OF CREDIT ASSIGNMENT
  • Generally there are four different types of course in all the programs conducted at the University of Mumbai
  • Compulsory Course =4 Credits per course
  • Core/Special Courses=3 Credits per course.
  • Applied Components =3 Credits per course
  • Foundation course =2 Credit per course
  • Skill Courses =2 Credit per course
  • The total credit value shall be 120 credits for all UG programs across the faculties.
  •  The total credit value shall be 80 credit for PG programmes under the faculty of Art’s & commerce and 96 credits in case of faculty of Science .
 
ALLOCATION OF TIME PER CREDIT
The time duration per credit is divided into two parts
I)    Approximately fifty percent of the time will be spent on class room instructions including practical as prescribed by the University.
II)    Rest of the time spent for assignments, project, journals writing ,case studies, library work industrial visits, attending seminars/workshop ,preparation for examination etc. will be considered as notional hours.

SHEME OF EVALUATIONS
(Subject to change as per University Guidelines)

The performance of tee students shall be evaluated in two parts internal assessment with 40% marks by way of continuous evaluations’ and by semester end assessment with 60% marks by conducting the theory examination.
I)    Internal Assessment :- It is defined as the assessment of the learners on the basis of continuous evaluation as envisaged in the credit based system by way of participation of learners in various academic and correlated activities in the given semester of the programme.
II)    Semester End Assessment: - It is defined as the assessment of the learners on the basis of performance in the semester end theory /written examination.

MODALITY OF ASSESSMENT
(Subject to change as per University Guidelines)


Internal Assessment 25%

  • One periodical class test
  • Active participation in routine instructions deliveries and overall conduct as a responsible learner mannerism articulation and exhibit of leadership qualities in organizing related academic activities’ .

Semester End Assessment 75%

Duration These examination shall be 2 ½ Hours Duration.

STANDARD OF PASSING

  • The learners shall have to obtain minimum of 40% marks in aggregate to qualify each course where the course consists of internal assessment and semester end examination. However the learners shall obtain minimum of 40% marks. i.e 10 out of 25 in the Internal Assessment and i.e 30 out of 75 in semester end examination.
  • To qualify each course minimum grade E shall be obtained by the learners in each course and project where application in particular semester.
     

METHOD TO CARRY FORWARD THE MARKS

  • A learners who PASSES in the Internal Assessment but FAILS in the Semester End Examination of the course shall reappear for the semester End examination of that course. However his/her marks of the Internal Assessment shall be carried over and he/she be entitled for grade obtained by him/her on passing of the complete course
  • A learner  who FAIL in the Internal Assessment but PASS in the Semester End Examination of the course shall submit and reappear for the Internal assessment in the form of project for that course. However his/her marks of Semester End Examination shall be carried over and he/she be entitled for grade obtained by him/her on qualifying the course

ATKT (ALLOWED TO KEEP TERM)

  • A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester II irrespective of number of head of failure in the semester I.
  • A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester III if he/she passes each of semester I and Semester II.

OR

  • A student who fails in not more than four courses of semester I and Semester II taken together with not more than two courses at each OF SEMESTER I & Semester II(For Arts and commerce Only )
  • A student who fails in not more than six courses of semester I and Semester II taken together with not more than three courses at each of semester I & semester II (For Science faculty ,for all subjects ,carrying 900 or more marks)
  • A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester IV irrespective of number of head of failure in the semester III. However the student shall pass each course of semester I And Semester II in order to appear for Semester IV.
  • A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester V If he/she passes Semester I, Semester II, Semester III & Semester IV.

OR

  • A student shall pass Semester I and Semester II and fails in not more than four courses of Semester III and Semester Iv taken together with not more than two courses at each of Semester III & Semester Iv (For Arts and Commerce only)
  • A student who fails in not more than six courses of Semester III And Semester IV taken together with not more than  three courses at each of Semester III & Semester IV(For Science faculty ,for all subject, carrying 900 or more marks)
  • A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester VI irrespective of number of course of failure in the Semester V
  • A student can appear for semester VI examination subject to above, but the result of Semester VI shall be kept in abeyance until student passes each of Semester I, Semester II , Semester III, Semester IV, Semester V.

 

Additional Examinations
a.    There will be one additional examination for semester I,II,III and IV for those who have failed or remained absent.
b.    This examination will be held 20 days after the declaration of result but not later 40days.
c.    The Examination of semester I,II,III,& IV  will be conducted at the end of the second term of the academic year.

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester II irrespective of number of head of failure in the semester I.

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester III if he/she passes each of semester I and Semester II.

OR

A student who fails in not more than four courses of semester I and Semester II taken together with not more than two courses at each OF SEMESTER I & Semester II(For Arts and commerce Only )

A student who fails in not more than six courses of semester I and Semester II taken together with not more than three courses at each of semester I & semester II (For Science faculty ,for all subjects ,carrying 900 or more marks)

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester IV irrespective of number of head of failure in the semester III. However the student shall pass each course of semester I And Semester II in order to appear for Semester IV.

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester V If he/she passes Semester I, Semester II, Semester III & Semester IV.

OR

A student shall pass Semester I and Semester II and fails in not more than four courses of Semester III and Semester Iv taken together with not more than two courses at each of Semester III & Semester Iv (For Arts and Commerce only)

A student who fails in not more than six courses of Semester III And Semester IV taken together with not more than  three courses at each of Semester III & Semester IV(For Science faculty ,for all subject, carrying 900 or more marks)

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester VI irrespective of number of course of failure in the Semester V

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester II irrespective of number of head of failure in the semester I.

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester III if he/she passes each of semester I and Semester II.

OR

A student who fails in not more than four courses of semester I and Semester II taken together with not more than two courses at each OF SEMESTER I & Semester II(For Arts and commerce Only )

A student who fails in not more than six courses of semester I and Semester II taken together with not more than three courses at each of semester I & semester II (For Science faculty ,for all subjects ,carrying 900 or more marks)

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester IV irrespective of number of head of failure in the semester III. However the student shall pass each course of semester I And Semester II in order to appear for Semester IV.

A student shall be allowed to keep term for semester V If he/she passes Semester I, Semester II, Semester III & Semester IV.

OR

A student can appear for semester VI examination subject to above, but the result of Semester VI shall be kept in abeyance until student passes each of Semester I, Semester II , Semester III, Semester IV, Semester V.
